The Tool That Changed Diamond Buying and What Came After
In 2001, buying a diamond online was mostly an act of trust. You read a description, looked at a certificate, and hoped the diamond lived up to what the numbers said. There was no reliable way to filter thousands of diamonds by cut quality without physically examining each one.
Garry Holloway changed that. He developed and patented the Holloway Cut Adviser, known as the HCA, as a fast screening tool for round diamond cut quality. For the first time, anyone shopping for a precision-cut lab-grown diamond or a natural diamond could enter five basic measurements and get a score that told them whether a diamond was worth a closer look.
It was not perfect. Holloway himself never claimed it was. But in 2001, it was the most accessible cut quality filter the market had ever seen, and thousands of people used it to navigate inventories that would have otherwise taken weeks to sort through manually.
The diamond industry was different then. The tools available to verify cut quality were limited. The HCA filled a real gap at a time when that gap had no other solution.
What happened next changed everything. Not because the HCA got better. Because the industry around it did.

How the HCA Score Works
The HCA takes five inputs: Depth percentage, Table percentage, Crown angle or percentage, Pavilion angle or percentage, and Culet percentage. It matches those measurements against predefined tables built around Holloway's criteria for cut quality and produces a score between 0 and 10.
Lower is better. Here is what each range means according to Holloway himself:
A score below 2 eliminates more than 95 percent of all diamonds. Any score in the 0 to 2 range is worth serious consideration. Scores between 2 and 4 are worth a look if the price is right. Scores of 5 and below should only be considered if price is the deciding factor. Very shallow diamonds with a fish eye effect score at the bottom should be avoided entirely.
One detail that confuses a lot of people: Holloway states that diamonds within the 0 to 2 range should all be considered equal. A score of 0.5 is not necessarily better than a score of 1.5. What he is acknowledging is that at the top end of the proportions range, differences in individual optical characteristics like brightness and fire become a matter of personal preference rather than measurable quality.
That is an honest and important admission. It is also the first sign that the HCA was always designed as a filter, not a final answer. For precision-cut lab-grown diamonds, filtering out the worst options is only the beginning of finding a diamond worth choosing.

What the HCA Cannot See
This is where the tool's limitations become important.
The HCA only works with five two-dimensional data points. A real diamond's light performance is the product of every facet working together in three dimensions. Star facets, upper girdle facets, and lower girdle facets collectively cover more surface area than the facets the HCA considers. None of their contributions are factored into the score.
The crown and pavilion measurements the HCA uses are also averaged and rounded before they go in. That averaging creates meaningful variance in the output. Two diamonds with very different actual measurements can produce identical HCA scores. More critically, a diamond with badly misaligned facets in three dimensions can score the same as one cut to super ideal cut precision. The HCA has no way to tell the difference.
The third limitation is the most fundamental. The HCA does not evaluate an actual model of the diamond. It works from a basic outline. Think of it as a silhouette compared to a full three dimensional scan. The silhouette can tell you roughly what shape something is. It cannot tell you how that shape actually performs.
Light performance in a certified lab-grown diamond cannot be reduced to five measurements. A diamond that scores well on the HCA may still reveal serious problems when put through Ideal Scope imaging, ASET analysis, or GCAL 8X certification. The HCA tells you what to rule out. It was never designed to tell you what to choose.

What Replaced the HCA and Why It Matters
In 2005, AGS Laboratories released a light performance grading system that changed the standard for cut quality evaluation entirely. In 2006, GIA followed with their own cut grade system. Both were built on technology the HCA could not compete with.
The AGS system performs sophisticated ray tracing on a full 3D model of the actual diamond. It accounts for the contribution of every single facet, not just the five measurements the HCA considers. The difference between the two approaches is not small. It is the difference between a silhouette and a complete three dimensional analysis of how light travels through a real diamond.
Against the AGS system, the HCA offers nothing additional. Holloway himself acknowledged this on his website. If a supplier has Ideal Scope photos or GemAdviser files for a diamond, those are more useful than the HCA score. We would extend that to include ASET images and GCAL 8X certification as well, since all three provide a level of detail and accuracy the HCA was never built to deliver.
There is also a statement that still appears on the HCA results page worth addressing directly. It claims the HCA grades cut more effectively than systems like AGS.
That claim has been factually incorrect since 2005. The AGS system has evaluated full 3D diamond models using ray tracing technology for two decades. The HCA has not been updated since February 2003. When it comes to light performance diamond standards, that gap is not a matter of opinion.

Where the HCA Still Has a Limited Use Today
The HCA is not completely without value. Within the GIA Excellent grade, where the range of actual cut quality is surprisingly wide, the HCA can still help filter out the weakest candidates quickly. If you are sorting through a large inventory and need a fast way to eliminate obvious underperformers, a score above 4 is a reasonable reason to move on.
That is the extent of it. Against the AGS light performance system, the HCA adds nothing. For certified lab-grown diamonds held to a real optical standard, it was never the right tool to begin with.
